 Transition period receives extension |

The EU commission has extended the period of validity during which higher levels of migration limit values (300 mg/kg) will still
be permissible. This applies to certain softeners (among others ESBO) contained in compounds of closures for fatty and oily
foods. The EU regulation (EG) 597/2008 decrees an extension of this period of validity from 30 June 2008 to 30 April 2009.
This regulation allows the food and closures industries an additional period of 10 months to safely evaluate further the compliance
with the more strict migration limit values of the plastic material regulation 2002/72/EG especially concerning critical product-/
packaging combinations. Producers of foods and closures had expressed their concern that with a deadline in July 2008 the results of
|
| long-term studies on packaging critical foodstuff such as foods in oil as well as pesto
and fatty sauces would not be available in a number that could warrant a conclusive evaluation of the safety of modified food packaging
on the one hand and the compliance with the migration limit values according to regulation 2002/72/EG in the product on the
other hand.

Good to know:
Silgan White Cap has tackled the challenges resulting from the new legal requirements for metal
closures early enough and thus has already reduced the migration out of the packaging materials.
